A letter to my rapist spread

Topic:
A letter to my rapist (poem)
Theme: To coincide with the rest of the publication without causing offence
Reasoning: To ensure that the design does not offend others.

Example one

Following the pink colour scheme of the previous spreads, this design explores a variety of factors in which promote a 'kitch' aesthetic. The typography present is in a handwritten font in order to promote meaning to the words written, in turn giving the words character. 14pt was used in order to ensure this was legible.

The image used was one in which was sent in during a call of submissions. Without physically depicting rape, the image exhibits the hardship and fear.

Example two

In conjunction to the initial drawings, boarders were devised in attempt to make the imagery blend with its surrounding, removing the sharp edges of the image. Bolder type was used in order to promote legibility, whilst also developing contrast.

The blue background compliments the imagery more than the previous pink. This would also help to break up the magazines aesthetic, as if each page is pink this may seem highly repetitive.

Example three

A different image was used within the third attempt in order to highlight a less intrusive image, whilst still being highly impactful. In order to further promote this the image was also reduced in size. A yellow colour pallet was explored, so that the spread stands out within the publication. Again a handwritten type was used, although a background was put in place in order to promote a clear contrast.

Feedback

When discussing these spreads with my peers they suggested that the use of imagery (especially photography), makes the subject too real, and may upset those effected by rape. They also suggested that the bright colours also somewhat made the subject matter seem positive, an element in which I certainly did not want to promote.

When discussing the spread they suggested that an illustration may be a more effective way in which to present the design.
